Colors to downplay a plum leather couch....?

My fiance and I have a plum leather livingroom set (three-seater couch, loveseat and chair with ottoman) and I was wondering about decorating tips to kind-of downplay the purple. When the room is bright from the blinds open in the day, it SCREAMS PURPLE!!!! Around 7pm you would think it was brown. We have a black tv stand and black and glass coffee table/ 2 end table set. Im looking for a paint color for the walls to downplay it when the room is bright as well as a color for an area rug over the wood floor. Thanks a bunch!!!

use light shades of yellow...yellow is the color opposite of purple so it complements it nicely, but it's subtle enough to not compete with the purple.
Reply:I would probably look in to a nice cream shade, it would look nice with the purple color, and the brown illusion that it creates, it will also go nicely with the black.

~good luck~
Reply:WOW/// plum 1 of my favorite colors.

How bout a tan.. rich tan would go w/ plum as well as u'r blk cabinets. U don't want to go to brite then it screams ...HELLLOOOO!!!

%26amp; by the sounds of it... u dont' want that.

Golds... browns... greens... get some throws in matching colors of the wall or designs. or pillows... vases... pix w/ plum in it but some of the other colors... that will tone down u'r plum %26amp; bring more a variety %26amp; texture into u'r rm.

Floor rug w/ design... Keep a litte of plum going thru out the room but add in some blks/tans/browns/golds/ maroon... keep it rich if that's what u'r aiming for. OR go bright but it sounds that's not what u want.

hope this helps

To downplay a purple, choose a color of a similar intensity! Lighter colors will draw your eye right back to the couch and it's undesirable-to-you grapey color.

Look at a medium-brown with greenish-gold undertones. It will add a sophistication and make a great foil for the purple, but be rich enough NOT to make the purple stand out. Think complementary and dark, not light and opposite, to get the eye to see it as an element of your decor and not "THE PURPLE COUCH". That means the other colors need some weight.

Go to www.benjaminmoore.com and use the "personal color viewer" to see what color HC-88 looks like. It is called Jamesboro Gold, and it is a really rich, sexy leather-color. You can go to the professional page on the main menu and order as many 8 inch x 8 inch color chips as you'd like, if you see other colors you think are interesting. The large chips are FREE, even the shipping is FREE!!!

Also, consider using intense throw pillows in rich, muted color patterns (maybe Persian-esqe?) to de-emphasize the couch. Pull the eye away or to the ground with deeply colored rugs and vibrant artwork up on the walls.

Think posh and rich, maybe even a little ethnic, not clean and contemporary. The more texture and deep tones, the less that couch will be noticed.

Good luck and have fun!
