What type of golden plum ripens in spring?

The difference between plums and greengages is one of the minor mysteries of gardening. These stone fruits are hybrids of the cherry plum and the sloe, developed centuries ago, probably in the Caucasus. These days we expect the domestic plum to have large, oval fruits, with skin varying from yellow and pink to deep purple, while the greengage is green or yellow, much smaller and more rounded, and very sweet and juicy. Plum or gage, that characteristic scent and smoky bloom on the skins is hard to resist.

These fruits are prone to frost damage because they flower in early spring - the end of March into April in my area. In colder districts, greengages and dessert plums are best grown as fans against sunny walls or fences. Greengages are generally less hardy and thrive where there is low rainfall and lots of sunshine.

It may be Prunella insititia or Mary's Plum.
