What's the effective way to get rid of root sprouts from a plum tree?

other than cutting the sprouts regularly

What's the effective way to get rid of root sprouts from a plum tree?
Plants tht are typically grafted, like a plum tree, must be planted properly in order to discourage suckers. If it was planted too shallow, your tree will sucker more readily.

If you bury the roots deeper, be careful, you might cause root rot. So use compost to cover the roots. That way the air can still get down in the root zone the way the tree is used to having it.

When you cut the suckers, wait until they are a solid twig. That way you don't encourage a hundred suckers to come out of one place. If you can see that a particular area is inundated with the capacity for suckers, you can cut that section out.

Most plants in the rose family, like plums, peaches, apricots, pears, cherrys, apples, and nectarines will have a tendency to sucker. If you get another one, pick the one that has a good root depth to begin with, then plant it even with your regular soil level surface.

I hope that helps.
