Will a NEWPORT PURPLE LEAF PLUM survive in grass?

I have an irrigation system. Does the fruit drop?

Will a NEWPORT PURPLE LEAF PLUM survive in grass?
No fruit . Ornamental only . If you want fruit , need something else . As far as being in the lawn, yeah it's fine. Just like any other tree .Their main problems are Japanese Beetles (cosmetic damage) and Black Knot fungus (when older) . It'll be OK .
Reply:Grass is fine, the problem is too much watering can stress a tree by leeching nutrients in the soil, about 1 watering a week in full fruit is all this tree needs. Also, the Newport Plum Tree IS a fruiting tree... It has little round fruit from about year 5 onward, but, it may not fruit every year.
Reply:I can't imagine why it would not survive. Just be sure not to plant it too close to the irrigation's lines as it, or any tree/shrub, will mess it up as it grows.

The purple leaf plum I am familiar with does not have fruit, more like berries. Not edible.

The only other advice I can give anyone is to never plant anything, except grass or ornamental grasses, near a walnut tree. The trees' roots emit a gas that will kill almost anything but grass.
