Difference between a plum and a plout?

As far as I can gather, plouts are a funky plum+apricot hybrid, and for some reason they are available in my local market–grown locally and organic.

plums now have thousands of varieties all differing in size, shape, and flavor. All originated from three main types: European, Japanese, and Western Asian. Related to the apricot, peach, sloe, and cherry, plums have a particularly close relationship with the cherry. The distinction is one mainly of size. During the Middle Ages, the word "plum" virtually meant any dried fruit. This usage is still seen in the "plum puddings" and "plum cakes". Deciding what is a plum and what is not is no easy matter.
