How do you properly prune a tree?

Any instructions on pruning fruit bearing trees?

A site with pictures and instructions would be great, i have a small orange tree and a very large plum tree.

How do you properly prune a tree?
It depends on the time of year, location of tree and type of tree.

Get rid of anything dead and any parts you do not like or which are inconveniently located..

Do it after the tree is dormant or after flowering.

Cut out all 'suckers'.

"Rotate' remaining branches so they do not bump into each other and get lots of light. By 'rotate' I mean the pattern of remaining branches as they come out of the main trunk.

Keep fruit trees very short so you can pick the harvest.

Finally, keep the branches and trunk short and really sturdy. That way the tree is less likely to be damaged in a strom.

(I am surprised no one answered you before this.)
