Plum (Prunus species)
Harvest fruit when full mature. Remove the seed. Seed may be sown in the fall or stratified seed may be planted in the spring. Stratify the seeds at 33 to 41 F. The sour cherry (Prunus cerasus) requires 90 to 150 days, the peach (Prunus persica) 98 to 105 days, and European plum (Prunus domestica) 90 days. Seed of plums and peaches should be planted 2 inches deep. (Like the apples and crabapples, the seed of most cultivated cherries, plums, and peaches will not reproduce true from seed.) Tree seed can be stratified by placing the seed in a moist 50:50 mixture of sand and peat moss. Suitable containers include coffee cans, plastic jars, and cottage cheese containers. (Punch holes in the lid of the container to provide air.) Seed can also be stratified in plastic bags. Stratify the seed in the refrigerator.
When should you plant plum seeds? And how?
Plant Needs
Zone: 4 to 9
Light: Best in full sun
Moisture: Prefers moist soil
Soil Type: Moist, acidic, well-drained loam but will tolerate slight alkalinity
Care
If pruning is desired, do so immediately after flowering.
Reply:Not knowing your location makes it difficult to answer your question. I suggest that you search the Internet for a Planting Calendar and Guide. There are lots of them and they will provide specific info for your locale. Good luck.
Reply:Ok, you know how to grow one now. But nobody pointed out that if you want fruit that what you grow from seed will not be the same as what the seed came from. Plums are not self fruitfull ( except European Plums, Green gage and Damson )
This means that they are a cross of two varities and will produce something different. Could be great or could be terrible. no reason not to try though. This is how new varities are developed.
Reply:The best time is in spring or early summer when the growing season starts so your tree would not be too cold in the winter or even worse freeze when it's young. (if you live somewhere in the temperate zone.) You should make a hole that is about a foot deep and then put the plum seeds in there, add a lot of water and bury them, but don't press the solid too hard so you won't squish them. Then just wait and in a few monthes you will have a beautiful tree.
