I believe the tree you are referring to is called a Thunder cloud purple leaf plum. Known for its fabulous deep burgundy colored foliage, and a beautiful lawn accent tree, it is just ornamental, and therefore bears no fruit. The same as Bradford Pear trees.
Thunder cloud is one of my favorite trees because of the bold, rich colored leaves. Looks great if planted near a blue spruce for contrast.
Thundering plum blossom does it grow fruit?
I haven't heard of it, but most ornamental plums (with pretty flowers) I understand will not bear fruit. search under the latin word prunus for information on the plant.
