I seem to have a lot of ants on my plum tree are they friend or foe?

They definitely are foe. If you look closely at the tips of the twigs, you will probably see that there are aphids (greenfiles). The ants milk them for their sticky excretions, and in turn protect the aphids against any enemies, such as ladybirds, or lacewings which love to eat the aphids. In turn, the aphids are sucking all the goodness out of the leaves of your tree and probably transmitting some disease in the process.

they are probably argintine ants (sugar ants) they love to make nests in your walls then invade your house. are they all the same size (small)?
Reply:They'll probably eat your plums. My Apple trees have the same problem.

You can buy some sticky tape that wraps around the tree trunk 3/4 down and the ants can't get beyond it. Should save the fruit.
Reply:They managed to kill my Flowering Cherry. They ate away the core of the trunk.
Reply:they are a bloody nuisance get some NIPPON
Reply:Cakes4, is spot on! Get rid of the blighters...
Reply:They are friendly as they eat the aphids maybe you can get something to kill aphids and then ants will go!
