I had a Purple Plum tree planted about 7 yrs. ago. After 4yrs. it began losing sap and died within 3 years.?

I would like to have it removed and another tree planted. I am in the south suburbs of Chicago IL. The tree will be planted close to the street and is needed for shade. I would like it to grow upright and grow no taller than 30 feet. I also need a tree where the roots are not evasive, I'm not interested in evergreens. My questions to you are: Do you have any suggestions as to the type of trees I might consider and any ideas as to what might have killed the Purple Plum? Finally will I be able to plant the new tree in the same area as the forementioned?(It is very likely to receive some salted water from snow plows in the winter months).

your tree had bores in it bores get after fruit trees and a purple leaf plum does have fruit not a lot but it is there i would sugest planting something that dosent fruit and will give more shade and the roots of this tree grow down the 2 i think you should get are bradford or a cleveland pears these trees dont get bores the plum must have had a place on it where the bores got in a small limb broke off can let them in. i have been in nursery work for 20 years in tennessee
Reply:your plum tree died? it could have been infested with beetle that bore inside and fed on a tree sap. a longhorned beetle for example. i think that you must report this onto a proper authority in your place before it could cause more damage .
