=)
Reply:Nectarine = Peach Smooth skin is a single gene recessive trait of Prunus persica (peach). This is the only difference between the two. The distinction is a horticultural one, not a botanical one.
I've never heard of the peach being crossed with much even in its own genus (plums, cherries, apricots almonds etc.) even though others have been wide crossed (like the plumcot). The peach has been crossed back to wild P. persica and one or two other VERY closely related spp. (very peach like) but this has been for disease Resistance and never for fruit qualities (it actually hurts fruit quality and takes much work to get a decent fruit after these crosses).
Reply:I believe it's a separate species. Much superior in taste and juiciness to the peach.
Reply:not its not a cross, its a variety of peach
A nectarine is a fuzzless variety of peach. It is NOT a cross between a peach and a plum. Fuzziness is a dominant trait of peaches. Occasionally when peach trees are cross or even self pollinated they will produce some fruit whose seeds will grow into nectarine trees and others which will be peach trees. Nectarines will sometimes appear on peach trees, and peaches sometimes appear on nectarine trees! It is impossible to tell which seeds from nectarine trees will produce nectarine bearing trees, so commercial growers take branches which produce nectarines and graft them onto peach trees. The branches will continue to produce nectarines.
Reply:peach and plum, why not look it up in a web search and find out when they invented this cross breed and where and who did it, impress someone.
